For Waikato homeowners — house pads, driveway excavation, retaining, pool and pond builds, landscape shaping. Tidy site, tidy finish, ready for the next trade on the day.
Residential earthworks at AJR is the work behind a home — the slab you don't see, the driveway you drive over every day, the retaining wall that holds the bank back, the landscape shaping that turns a section into a yard.
Most homeowners ringing AJR want one of four things — a house pad cut for a new build, a driveway done properly with the right sub-base and a finish that lasts, a retaining wall to make a section usable, or landscape shaping for a pool, a pond, or a back-yard transformation. We do all four, and we do them as one operator on the gear, not a brokered job that turns up as a different ute every day.
If you're a homeowner reading this, the thing to know is: residential is the lane where most people get burned. Cheap quotes that miss the sub-base, contractors who cut corners on compaction, retaining walls that bow in two seasons, driveways that pothole inside a year. Adam doesn't compete on the bottom of the price stack — he competes on the work lasting. The premium isn't huge; the difference shows up in five years.
If you're building new, we'll fit into your builder's programme — strip, cut, fill, hand over level. If you're renovating or upgrading, we'll work around the house, the kids and the dog. If it's a one-off driveway or pond build, that's still a real job and gets the same site walk, same written quote, same operator on the seat.
Five steps from the first call to driving down the new driveway. Plain English, no surprises.
Adam comes out and walks the property with you. Driveway line, pad location, retaining contour, what the neighbours can see, where the gear has to come in. 30 to 60 minutes on site, no charge, no high-pressure pitch.
Within 48 hours you get a written quote — scope, materials, indicative timeline, exclusions. If something needs council sign-off or engineer involvement, it's a separate line and we'll tell you who handles it.
Once you've signed the quote, we book the slot. We tell you the day before if the weather's going to push us. We're not the contractor who silently drops off the calendar.
Adam runs the machine. Daily updates by text if you're at work. If something changes — a service shows up we didn't know about, the ground's softer than expected — you hear about it before we work around it.
Site goes back tidy — spoil cleared, level finished, gates closed, photos on file. Your concreter, paver or landscaper should be able to start the next day without rework.
No stock photos. Every shot is a Waikato property AJR has worked on.
Two water tanks installed for a Pirongia homeowner — in less than a day. The kind of job that should be simple, often isn't, and the client's review tells the story better than we can.
Brief: install two new water tanks on a Pirongia residential property. The tank pad needed cutting in, levelled, compacted and ready by end of day so the plumber could connect the next morning.
We rolled in, cut and prepped both pads, set the tanks, levelled and tidied. Off site before dark. The client review reads: "Additional water tanks in, in less than a day — fantastic job and will be using his team again."
Five questions we hear on most residential quotes. Straight answers — including the ones that mean we're not the right fit.
It depends on length, soil type, fall, drainage and whether we're cutting in or just resurfacing. As a guide, a properly built rural-style driveway — strip, sub-base, geotextile, metal — typically runs from a few thousand for a short residential run up to ten-plus for a longer rural driveway with retaining or culverts. The price isn't a Google answer; we'll quote yours after a site walk.
Yes — most residential work has the home occupied. We start at a reasonable hour, keep the gear off the lawn where possible, and tell you the day before if we need access to anything inside the boundary. Kids and dogs sorted with you up front.
For most residential earthworks — driveway, pad, small retaining, landscaping — no consent is required if it stays within the rules of the district plan. For larger retaining (structural height), significant fill, or any earthworks near a watercourse, consent might be needed. We'll flag it on the walk-through.
Up to 1.5m generally doesn't need a building consent if it isn't supporting a surcharge. Above that, or supporting load, you'll need a producer statement from an engineer. We work with local Waikato engineers — happy to coordinate the structural side.
Yes — full public liability, plant and vehicle cover, current at standard NZ contractor levels. Certificates of currency are available on request before we start.
Phone Adam direct or send through some photos and a rough idea. He'll come and walk it with you, then quote in writing.
